My daily walk/train ride to and from work leaves me with a lot of time to pipe sounds into my ears. And since the music library on my phone is severely lacking (one can only listen to We Can’t Stop so many times), I almost always opt for podcasts. Plus, they’re a great way to stay up to date on current events and pop culture and, I don’t know, um, learn something?
So, here are a few of my current favorites:
The gold standard: This American Life
This one almost goes without saying. Who doesn’t love This American Life? Also, I have a crush on Ira Glass. A new show is available weekly, but you can also download the TAL app and get access to all 500+ past episodes.
My new obsession: NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour
“NPR’s entertainment and pop culture round-table podcast features spirited discussions of movies, books, television, & nostalgia” This podcast is relatable/non-pretentious, yet makes me think of movies/shows/music/etc in ways I otherwise wouldn’t have. I think I look forward to it more than TAL these days.
The old standby: Stuff You Should Know
Josh & Chuck teach you everything you need to know (kind of) about a variety of topics such as castration, who killed JKF, and Dungeons & Dragons. Sidenote: I just watched my first SYSK video and it’s so weird to see/hear these familiar voices come from strangers’ mouths.
The one that makes me blush: Savage Lovecast
Dan Savage, author/journalist behind the sex column Savage Love. If you’ve read the column, you get the gist. If you’re a prude, do not listen. Actually, maybe listening will help remove the stick up your…
Gwyneth’s recommendation: The Dinner Party Download
The Dinner Party Download is an hour-long celebration of culture, food, and conversation with hosts Rico Gagliano and Brendan Francis Newnam designed to help you dazzle your friends at this weekend’s get-together.
A seasonal treat: Tuesdays with Aaron
Aaron Rodgers’ weekly radio show with ESPN Milwaukee’s Jason Wilde. This podcast has fed my delusions of being besties with Aaron.
Honorable mentions: Fresh Air, Radiolab, Song Exploder
What are your favorites? I’d love to add to the rotation.
