This weekend, we’re finishing up watching the rest of the Best Picture nominees before a friend’s Oscar party on Sunday. Other than that, should be fairly relaxing. Have a great one!

Bonne Fêta | a cheesy birthday party

28 Feb

This past weekend our friends hosted a cheese-themed dinner party.* Attendees were tasked with making a dish for one of the six courses, with the only rule being that one of the main ingredients must be cheese. Did I mention most of us were from Wisconsin? It was an exciting meal. Also exciting was the abundance of cheese puns in the pre-party email chain.

Here’s a breakdown of the dishes, all of which were delicious.

Spinachoke bites made by Rebecca and Paul.

Brie, apple and pecan crostinis made by Keith and Alex.

Cheese Course:

Manchego and gruyère, along with a divine creme fraiche, strawberries and toffee dip combo (not pictured) made by Elizabeth and DJ.

Salad & Bread Course:

Micro greens with goat cheese, and spicy candied pecans and Cheddar Bay biscuits made by Alex and Seth.

First (Pasta) Course:

Sweet Potato Gnocchi Mac & Blue Cheese made by Tyler and me. Winner of the “Most Inventive Use of Cheese” award.

Thoughts/notes on the dish: We tripled the recipe to feed the crowd and ended up with a ton of sauce. Not that I’m complaining—I could eat the stuff with a spoon. I also think we were juuust under triple the amount of sweet potato, so we had to take out a bunch of sauce to keep it from being too soupy. Overall, the dish was just ok to me. While I loved the sauce, the gnocchi recipe was just too cinnamon-y for my taste (I’m not a fan of cinnamon). However, it did get better the next day (thinking a dish is just ok does not stop me from gorging on it a second time, apparently.)

Second (Meat) Course:

Tenderloin of Beef stuffed with Spinach, Leeks, and Goat Cheese + Red Wine Sauce with Mashed Potatoes with Garlic, Mascarpone, and Caramelized Leeks made by Libby and John. Winner of best overall dish and star of my  daydreams for the past week.

Brie & Jam-stuffed Puff Pastries made by Gina and Ryan.

Deep Dark Chocolate Cheesecake made by Steph, which also served as Libby’s birthday cake. This was my other vote for best dish. Delightfully decadent.

Overall, I’d say it was a Grade AA party.

*Idea for party inspired by Vicky’s friends’ annual party.

Is there anyone cuter than Paul Rudd? I just don’t think so. And last night’s lip sync battle with Jimmy Fallon serves as proof.

And his choice of Queen + flailing dance moves serves as proof that we are, in fact, soul mates.

My 6 favorite podcasts

6 Feb

My daily walk/train ride to and from work leaves me with a lot of time to pipe sounds into my ears. And since the music library on my phone is severely lacking (one can only listen to We Can’t Stop so many times), I almost always opt for podcasts. Plus, they’re a great way to stay up to date on current events and pop culture and, I don’t know, um, learn something?

So, here are a few of my current favorites:

talThe gold standard: This American Life

This one almost goes without saying. Who doesn’t love This American Life? Also, I have a crush on Ira Glass. A new show is available weekly, but you can also download the TAL app and get access to all 500+ past episodes.

pchhMy new obsession: NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour

“NPR’s entertainment and pop culture round-table podcast features spirited discussions of movies, books, television, & nostalgia” This podcast is relatable/non-pretentious, yet makes me think of movies/shows/music/etc in ways I otherwise wouldn’t have. I think I look forward to it more than TAL these days.

imagesThe old standby: Stuff You Should Know

Josh & Chuck teach you everything you need to know (kind of) about a variety of topics such as castration, who killed JKF, and Dungeons & Dragons. Sidenote: I just watched my first SYSK video and it’s so weird to see/hear these familiar voices come from strangers’ mouths.

ps.vtlzknxq.170x170-75A seasonal treat: Tuesdays with Aaron

Aaron Rodgers’ weekly radio show with ESPN Milwaukee’s Jason Wilde. This podcast has fed my delusions of being besties with Aaron.

Honorable mentions: Fresh Air, Radiolab, Song Exploder

What are your favorites? I’d love to add to the rotation.
