My 6 favorite podcasts

6 Feb

My daily walk/train ride to and from work leaves me with a lot of time to pipe sounds into my ears. And since the music library on my phone is severely lacking (one can only listen to We Can’t Stop so many times), I almost always opt for podcasts. Plus, they’re a great way to stay up to date on current events and pop culture and, I don’t know, um, learn something?

So, here are a few of my current favorites:

talThe gold standard: This American Life

This one almost goes without saying. Who doesn’t love This American Life? Also, I have a crush on Ira Glass. A new show is available weekly, but you can also download the TAL app and get access to all 500+ past episodes.

pchhMy new obsession: NPR Pop Culture Happy Hour

“NPR’s entertainment and pop culture round-table podcast features spirited discussions of movies, books, television, & nostalgia” This podcast is relatable/non-pretentious, yet makes me think of movies/shows/music/etc in ways I otherwise wouldn’t have. I think I look forward to it more than TAL these days.

imagesThe old standby: Stuff You Should Know

Josh & Chuck teach you everything you need to know (kind of) about a variety of topics such as castration, who killed JKF, and Dungeons & Dragons. Sidenote: I just watched my first SYSK video and it’s so weird to see/hear these familiar voices come from strangers’ mouths.

savageThe one that makes me blush: Savage Lovecast

Dan Savage, author/journalist behind the sex column Savage Love. If you’ve read the column, you get the gist. If you’re a prude, do not listen. Actually, maybe listening will help remove the stick up your…

dinnerpartyGwyneth’s recommendation: The Dinner Party Download

The Dinner Party Download is an hour-long celebration of culture, food, and conversation with hosts Rico Gagliano and Brendan Francis Newnam designed to help you dazzle your friends at this weekend’s get-together.

ps.vtlzknxq.170x170-75A seasonal treat: Tuesdays with Aaron

Aaron Rodgers’ weekly radio show with ESPN Milwaukee’s Jason Wilde. This podcast has fed my delusions of being besties with Aaron.

Honorable mentions: Fresh Air, Radiolab, Song Exploder

What are your favorites? I’d love to add to the rotation.

Happy Birthday Tyler!

13 Oct

Just want to take a sec to wish a very Happy Birthday to my future husband and current favorite person in the whole world, Tyler.

I hope the final year of your twenties is the best!

Love you, love you, love you!

weekend recap | fall activities

1 Oct

This weekend was the perfect example of why fall is my favorite season – beautiful weather, leaves changing color, and delicious treats!

On Saturday, Tyler and I drove out to the Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, where we fought our way through the throngs of children to sample apple pie a la mode, apple cider donuts, pumpkin soup, hot buttered apple cider, chocolate almond pumpkin bread, salsa, cheese, sausage, and mustard. I was too busy jockeying for position at the sample table to get any pictures of the food, but here are some other scenes from the day (Tyler’s childhood summer camp is right down the road from the Elegant Farmer, so we stopped and took a stroll down memory lane).

summer favorites

20 Jun

“And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.”

― F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

In honor of today’s Summer Solstice, I have compiled a list of a few of my favorite things about summer. They are, in no particular order:

Dining al fresco.

Food just tastes better when eaten in fresh air. Drinks, more refreshing. Company, livelier. Whether it’s a restaurant patio, friend’s backyard deck, or picnic in the park, it is always exactly where I want to be at that moment.

The perfect temperature.

There are a couple evenings a summer when I notice that it’s neither warm nor chilly, but the absolute perfect temperature – comfortable and almost nonexistent. I may have to start carrying a thermometer around with me so I can tell you definitively what this temp is, but for now, just pay attention. You’ll know it when you (don’t) feel it.

A cabin on a lake

Preferably in Northern Wisconsin. Both my and Tyler’s families spend a week up north, so we have double the chances to indulge in the north woods (though this summer we may be 0 for 2).

Farm fresh produce

Is there anything more delicious than a fresh tomato? I really don’t think so. Except maybe that fresh tomato in a caprese salad.

Crisp white wine

I am a red wine drinker by and large, but when it’s hot out, I switch to white. So refreshing, and perfect for the aforementioned outdoor dining.

22 May

In her post today, Joanna from Cup of Jo asked: what three things make you happy?

Here are mine, in no particular order…

A good story. I’m currently reading this one:

A glass of wine while cooking

This is exactly what I look like when I cook

Sleeping with the windows open
